18-year veteran officer arrested after missing guns investigation

A former captain and 18-year veteran of the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety was arrested on Wednesday after an investigation into missing guns.

44-year-old Harold Thad Turner was taken into custody by SLED agents and charged with Grand Larceny.

Officers say Turner was arrested after an internal investigation on the possible removal of city property without authorization.

According to an arrest warrant, video surveillance shows Turner removing at least one gun from the department's armory. Police said a total of eight guns were missing.

Investigators said documents at Big John's Jewelry & Pawn show that Turner's wife pawned the weapons.

Turner was booked at the Orangeburg County Detention Center and recevied a $10,000 personal recognizance bond Wednesday afternoon.

He was dismissed from the department after being charged.
